The City of Santa Paula seeks an Assistant Public Works Director who is highly attuned to the needs of the City. This individual will serve under the direction of the Public Works Director, however, this role allows for a great level of professional growth and advancement opportunities. If you aspire to grow into a director position, this role is a great starting point. Our ideal candidate is communicative, collaborative, and flexible and will use their background in administration, engineering, inspection, operations, and maintenance of public works to assist the City in its Capital Improvement Program (CIP) efforts. This motivated professional will work closely with their team to facilitate City projects while also creating a friendly rapport with residents and key stakeholders.

The Assistant Public Works Director is part of the City’s leadership team supporting a culture that inspires collaboration, career development, and excellent community relations. The individual in this role will work under the general direction of the Public Works Director, who has a supportive yet collaborative style of management. When working in this role, you work closely with others while having the opportunity to spearhead your own initiatives and shape the department. In this at-will position, several of your responsibilities include assisting the Public Works Director, providing technical oversight to the PWD service divisions, supervising Streets Maintenance staff, serving as the City Engineer to oversee the capital improvement program and development projects, and resolving citizen inquiries and complaints.
Background and Education:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering or a closely related field is required.
- Experience in the administration, engineering, inspection, operations, and maintenance of public works with some supervisory experience.
- Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a Professional Civil Engineer issued by the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists is required.
- A valid Class C California driver's license.
- A master’s degree is a plus.
