Associate Engineer | Contra Costa Water District

The ideal candidate is a highly motivated self-starter with strong interpersonal and leadership skills, a demonstrated record of successfully completing projects, sound knowledge of engineering principles and the ability to develop in-house design packages as the engineer of record and to manage design consultants. The ideal candidate values and incorporates safety in work practices and design products and will have experience in infrastructure design and public contracting, preferably with a focus on water facility and infrastructure design.   The successful candidate will be an integral member of the team responsible for planning, designing and constructing improvements to the District's untreated water system and water treatment plants (WTPs). The Untreated Water Facilities Improvement Program implements projects to maintain and improve the pump stations, canals, and appurtenant infrastructure associated with the Contra Costa Canal, conveyance pipelines and facilities installed as part of the Los Vaqueros Reservoir system, and Mallard Slough intake and pipeline. The candidate may have an opportunity to work on the Canal Modernization Project, which will replace one or more segments of the Contra Costa Canal with a large diameter pipeline. The WTP Improvements Program implements projects that have been prioritized in the WTP Master Plan for the District’s three treatment plants to meet regulatory requirements and treated water production demands through safe and cost-effective operations. Other responsibilities include reviewing utilities and developments that are proposed for construction within the right-of-way of District infrastructure and providing comments to protect the District’s assets from damage during construction and preserve access for long-term maintenance.   As a member of the Engineering Department, the successful candidate will be a technical resource throughout the District, including support to the Operations and Maintenance Department, and will team with engineers whose responsibilities include the programs described above, as well as untreated water reservoirs, distribution system renewal and replacement, and treated water distribution facilities. Disciplines that are recognized as contributing toward these assignments include civil, mechanical, structural, geotechnical and environmental engineering.  Additionally, the position will develop construction cost estimates, participate in project design reviews, administer consulting and construction contracts, and coordinate engineering and construction activities with other District departments. CCWD commits to training and mentoring employees to ensure ongoing technical, project management, and professional growth and development.   General Job Function: The Associate Engineer is the full journey level class within the Engineering series. This classification performs professional engineering work in the planning, design, construction and operation of water systems, facilities, and related projects. The Associate Engineer receives direction from supervisory or management personnel, exercises technical and functional supervision over professional and technical staff, and may exercise direct supervision over technical staff. The Associate Engineer class is distinguished from the Assistant Engineer by the assignment of the full range of professional duties and the employees acquisition of a Principal Engineer license. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Movement to this level is contingent on meeting performance standards established by the District and the resource management needs of the organization. Associate Civil Engineer is the registered journey level classification in the engineering series.
