Anaheim Canyon Pedestrian Improvement Project

Project Location:

La Palma Ave from Kraemer Blvd to Tustin Ave &
Grove Street south of La Palma Ave

Project Description:

The Anaheim Canyon Pedestrian Improvement Project created an urban greening and safe pedestrian network between the newly constructed Metrolink Commuter Rail Station, Kaiser Permanente medical campus, and the Anaheim Canyon Business District – Orange _ounty’s manufacturing powerhouse.  The result is improved safety, accessibility, and mobility for the more than 40,000 people employed within four square miles, and residents living in nearby work/live lofts and condominiums.  Total Project Cost:$3,500,000

Project Justification:

The project addresses pedestrian issues including safety and accessibility in one of the oldest industrialized areas of Orange County. The Anaheim Canyon Business District is four square miles with approximately 1,800 businesses employing over 50,000 people. The area is undergoing major transformations including Kaiser Permanente’s 1;3 million square foot medical campus (260 beds), an expanded Metrolink Station with a 2nd track/platform, and new condominium homes.  Pedestrian safety and accessibility is a top priority because it attracts a diversified workforce and improves quality of life.  The pedestrian elements are holistic -elements complement each other with the end result being a safe, convenient, and beautiful pedestrian network. Elements include traffic calming measures to increase pedestrian safety, networking walkways between major destinations points, providing effective emergency access to Kaiser Hospital, and adding attractive landscaping to create an urban greening environment, including raised landscaped medians (which prevents midblock crossings) and parkways.

Special Circumstances:

2013 APWA Project of the Year

Project Attachments:

The Anaheim Canyon Business District is the second largest industrial center in Orange County and home to 32% of the _ity’s jobs;  Aging infrastructure, dating back to the booming Aerospace and Defense Industry, is leading the City to re-emerge the District as a premier business center.  One key element is to promote the District as a “green zone;” As of 2010, the Anaheim Planning Department indicated that the District lacked any cohesive sidewalk network.  To that end, the pedestrian improvements were constructed to ensure non-motorized mobility contributed to the sustainability of the environment. The pedestrian network is ADA compliant, addresses traffic calming issues on major corridors, and the landscaping is California friendly and supported by efficient irrigation systems. The landscaping is “pedestrian-oriented;” The goal is to increase the number of people who choose to walk to their work site, walk to lunch, or take a “walking break” while working;
