Contribution to the Profession:

Mr. Yourman served as an officer on the ASCE Orange County Branch for over 10 years.  He is a past president of the Branch and past chair of their Professional Practices Committee.  He led a nine-year effort to change the County of Orange process to hire architectural and engineering (A&E) services using a qualifications-based selection (QBS) system instead of the County’s previous “pay to play” system.  (Several County supervisors were indicted, convicted, and jailed for their “pay to play” system.)  The County has now used that QBS system for A&E services for over 20 years.

He has provided geotechnical services for over 200 projects in the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.  Together with Mr. Diaz, they developed the prototype container wharf of the future in the early 1980s.  That design is still used as the basis for new container wharfs.  In addition, they introduced most of the current geotechnical design and construction practices in the Ports.

Mr. Yourman has co-authored more than a dozen technical articles for national and international conferences on various geotechnical engineering subjects.  He has lectured at 10 universities.

He has participated in the ASCE Orange County Branch mentor program for young engineers since the program’s inception.

Mr. Yourman has completed 100 Angel Flight missions.  (Angel Flight provides flights for passengers who can’t afford airline tickets or for whom travel by land or by commercial airline would pose a physical hardship.)  In this effort, he has flown over 25,000 miles helping those in need.  His passengers have ranged in age from 2 years to over 80 years.

Previously, he served on several volunteer committees for Corona del Mar High School, including their Super Boosters Club (as vice president), Boys Volleyball Booster Club (as vice president), and as president of the Cross Country and Track Booster Club.

He refereed for the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) for 9 years.

Allen and his wife, Kimberley, established the Allen & Kimberley Yourman Scholarship in 2009, which awards undergraduate scholarships at UCLA.  They have recently established the Kenneth L. Lee graduate scholarship, which will begin awarding funds in 2023. Both scholarships are designed to benefit geotechnical engineering students.

Mr. Yourman has volunteered for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Aero Squadron Reserve Unit (ASRU) for 7 years.  In 2017, he was awarded ASRU’s Professional Services Responder of the Year.
