Rte 405, Culver Overcrossing Bicycle Striping and Signing Project

Project Location:

Located in Orange County, in the City of Irvine at Route 405 and Culver Drive Overcrossing.

Project Description:

On Culver Drive to the east and west of the I-405 Interchange lies a gap in the bike mobility network between the existing Class 1 bikeway and the Class 2 bikeway. This project filled the gap by re-striping the existing Culver Drive Overcrossing in each direction and modifying the existing center median to provide space to connect the once disconnected bicycle facilities. The roadway improvements include an upgraded Class 2 Bikeway in each direction, six - 12 foot standard lanes and high visibility green colored markings throughout. At each on-ramp is a free-right from Culver Drive where green conflict markings were added for improved cyclist visibility and safety.

Project Justification:

This project was first brought to the attention of Caltrans by the Orange County Bicycle Coalition as being a priority concern in the community of cyclists communing in the Irvine area. This project creates an important link in an extensive network of bike routes, creating safer access connecting local major bike trails and bike ways across Caltrans facilities. It is unique to have any marked bike paths along an over-cross since they generally stop on either side of the interchange. Through the cooperation and input from the City of Irvine and the community, this project became one of the first for District 12 to incorporate green bicycle facilities on the over-cross and represents a change in the traditional vehicle focused design to a broader multi-modal mindset. The project expands upon traditional design standards of the Highway Design Manual (HDM) and Manual Of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Caltrans culture is now looking towards other innovations and used the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) design guidance for the design of its bicycle street elements for this project.

Special Circumstances:

Through Caltrans outreach and active community involvement this project strengthened the bond between Caltrans, the City of Irvine, cyclists, pedestrians and drivers in Orange County.

Project Attachments:

The existing Culver Drive at the i-405 over-crossing is a 6 lane facility that functions as partial cloverleaf interchange that provides tow intersections at the NB and SB I-405 off-ramps, two loop on-ramps and tow tangent on ramps. All on-ramps provide free right turns onto the I-405 from Culver Drive.
