2013 A.A. Physics - San Diego Mesa College

Experience:

Adeleine started her civil engineering career in late-2017 and has been actively engaged in her professional development. Within the short two years of her career, she has proven herself to be a dependable member of her team by taking the lead on several projects. Despite being one of the youngest members on her team, her senior colleagues recognize her skills and demonstrate their confidence in her by coming to her for guidance and support. Adeleine has worked on diverse and challenging projects, ranging from seismic performance, residential development, sports infrastructure, to commercial/industrial warehouse. Her experience portfolio includes projects from northern to southern California, in Nevada, and New York. One of her first significant projects was the Banc of California Stadium for the Los Angeles Football Club, where she prepared the site observations report for all the construction’s earthwork activities. Adeleine was also heavily involved in the Raiders Las Vegas Stadium, where she performed all the field explorations, evaluated shallow and deep foundation designs, responded to Requests for Information, and managed 5,000+ field density test results and 1,600+ auger cast-in-place piles installed during construction.

After joining her team at Jacobs in July 2019, Adeleine has provided significant support on improving Interstate 10, a major corridor in Southern California used for daily commute, domestic commerce, and international trade. The benefits of this project will help reduce vehicle congestion and increase mobility along this heavily traveled interstate. Using the geotechnical information that she evaluated from the project’s 400+ borings, Adeleine personally designed and sealed two of the proposed bridges as well as reviewed and approved over 30 retaining walls along the interstate. Adeleine is also currently working on a multi-million-dollar earthquake recovery project for infrastructures damaged by the July 4 and 5, 2019 Ridgecrest Earthquakes. The M6.4 and M7.1 quakes literally jolted millions of Southern Californians’ sense of safety and rendered many buildings in the area structurally unsafe and economically unrepairable. She spent over a week in Ridgecrest to document evidence of surface ruptures and infrastructure damages and performed subsurface exploration to evaluate the subsurface’s seismic hazard potentials. Her work will help increase the seismic safety of future design and expedite the reconstruction of damaged structures to minimize disruption to the community’s operation and economy.

Adeleine is also a big advocate for continuing education. In 2019 alone, she had presented her project at one technical workshop and attended over 14 technical seminars, after which she would share what she learned with her team at work. Adeleine was named a recipient of the 2019 Women in Deep Foundations Professional Development Grant, an award given only to five exceptional women in the deep foundations industry. She was also featured by her alma mater, University of California, Berkeley, as an exemplary alumna for her professional achievements. During summer 2019, Adeleine also took a college-credit class, in addition to her full-time work schedule and volunteering activities, on Principles of Management to prepare for her future transition to project management. She is currently working on obtaining Safety Assessment Program (SAP) and Project Management Professional (PMP) certifications.

Comments:

Outside of her leadership positions, Adeleine also enjoys giving back through community services. In 2019, Adeleine assisted with the renovation of Laurel House for teen boys and served breakfast at the Ronald McDonald’s House for children with cancer and their families, both events hosted by ASCE OC Community Outreach Committee. After her move to OC in 2017, Adeleine has also been an active volunteer with multiple organizations outside of ASCE, including the OC American Red Cross, OC Habitat for Humanity - Women Build Committee, OC Cal Alumini, and Hashtag Lunchbag. Her voluntary contributions to the community and the civil engineering profession had earned her the ASCE Outstanding Engineer Volunteer Recognition
during the 2019 Engineers Week.

Civic:

As the youngest and only female board member of the ASCE OC Geo-Institute, Adeleine is particularly passionate in promoting her profession to other younger members and young girls to encourage diversity in the geotechnical field for the next generation. Leveraging her active involvement within the YMF community, Adeleine takes on the role of the G-I YMF Liaison and works with OC, LA, and San Diego YMF University Outreach Committees to promote G-I’s technical and social events to the student chapters. The OC G-I’s November 2019 technical tour was one of the examples where the event was well attended by younger members and students from local universities as well as Cal Poly Pomona and UC San Diego.

In 2019, Adeleine co-founded a civil engineering scholarship foundation at San Diego Mesa College, where she had a humble start before transferring to obtain her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at UC Berkeley. This scholarship will assist the academic pursuit of a student who has the intention to obtain an advanced degree and career in civil or a related engineering field. Adeleine also played a key role in assisting ASCE OC K-12 Committee and ASCE UC Irvine in preparing a proposal to DiscoverE for the Bell Girl Day Grant. The proposal outlined ASCE OC K-12/UC Irvine’s vision of an immersive introduction to female high school students to different paths of civil engineering and their impacts on the community. With her initiative, DiscoverE awarded ASCE OC with the $750 funding assistance for the Girl Day 2020 to take place.

Adeleine has also been instrumental in the renewal of the ASCE OC Government Relations Committee and represented ASCE OC through her meetings with lawmakers at the local, state, and federal levels. The impacts of her contribution far exceed those specific to Orange County and help promote the civil engineering profession as a whole. Through her advocacy efforts, she informs the public and elected officials issues important to the civil engineering profession, such as funding for infrastructure investment and hazard mitigation research. Understanding that an informed public is one of the necessary steps to increase infrastructure investment, Adeleine collaborated with OC T&DI to host a panel on Senate Bill (SB) 1 with distinguished guests from Caltrans District 12, Orange County Transportation Authority, and Orange County Public Works. The panel allowed ASCE OC members the opportunity to hear the positive impacts of SB 1 funding on local and state surface transportation infrastructure and see the value of their investment. Adeleine is also a frequent contributor to the Government Relations articles on the ASCE OC Newsletter, where she continuously promotes the California’s Infrastructure Report Card and encourages members to attend legislative events such as the fly-ins, town halls, and “back-home” office visits with elected officials. Adeleine recently started her role as a corresponding member on the ASCE Committee on Younger Members, where she hopes to contribute to the Younger Member Program of the Legislative Fly-In to engage more young members in government affairs.

Suggested Award Summary:

Adeleine J. Tran, P.E., is a Geotechnical Engineer with Jacobs Engineering Group, Inc. She is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, where she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees with an emphasis in geotechnical engineering. After joining ASCE in 2017, the group has been an incredible platform for Adeleine to grow professionally and personally. She currently serves as a board member on multiple committees within ASCE OC Branch/YMF and a corresponding member on ASCE Committee on Younger Members. Adeleine is passionate about giving back to the community and advocating for the important role the civil engineering profession plays in our quality of life. In her non-engineering life as a food lover and travel enthusiast, she enjoys exploring new places and trying the locals’ favorite restaurants.
