Ziad Mazboudi, PE. President’s Message ASCE Orange County Branch 2010-2011
I am honored and proud to have joined the rank of some of the great ASCE presidents who have come before me.
It is very humbling and brings me great pleasure to serve as the Orange County branch president for 2010-11. I joined the ASCE leadership team six years ago as the
legislative committee chair. At that time, I decided to stop just reading about what ASCE is doing and take part of the action instead. I wanted to help chart my own
destiny and shape the future of my fellow and future civil engineers through volunteering and positive activism. It felt like it was the right decision,
as I felt that I was part of a greater cause, part of a family of about 150,000, spread around the entire US and even the world.
That said, I decided to get even more involved and joined the Board of Directors, with more responsibilities and plenty of fun times.
This organization operates on the volunteer model and only operates with the generous time given by
many of our members, your fellow professionals. Only you can make this Branch even better and only
you can get out of this organization what you put into it. Our Branch has many opportunities for
volunteerism and I invite you to become a regular participant in the Branch and Section activities. Please
contact me for an opportunity to enhance your professional career and lend support to this outstanding
organization. And, should we call upon you for assistance, please consider helping out. Some would say
there is no higher calling to help one another and, in this spirit, I invite you to join one of any number of our standing Committees that can be found on this web site.
I want to thank Past President Kathereen Shinkai, PE and Ken Rosenfield, PE our Past Past President for their fantastic
guidance and continuous support, and look forward to working with them in the coming year. For a young engineer, Kathereen never ceased to amaze me with her accomplishments
and leadership, and I congratulate her on a very successful year.
As far as our current Board, it is made up of an amazing mixture of talent, knowledge, energy and plenty of great ideas.
Together we plan on having a very successful year. We have mixed background, two from the private sector, and two from the public sector. Our Vice President is Joshua Nelson,
PE and our treasurer is Tapas Dutta, PE. Both Josh and Tapas are in the private sector. Our newcomer is Penny Lew, PE. Penny and I both work for public agencies.
I hope that during the year, we can balance our issues and our programs to cover both the public and private issues, to reach out to our members in both sectors.
The Orange County Branch has longevity that many other professional organizations envy. A part of
this longevity is the result of the consistency of this organization and our excellent monthly lunch
meetings. We will continue the monthly programs and you are encouraged to take advantage of the
learning opportunities that we provide. We have a great line-up of speakers throughout the year and
your suggestions for programs are also invited. The Orange County Branch enters this year in good
financial and operating condition thanks to the prior Board members and all of the fine efforts of our volunteers. With your continued support, this will be another terrific year!
